CBD oil as a supplement is safe to use, but it can react with various substances that affect the work of our brain. Alcohol is one such substance. Can alcohol consumption during CBD supplementation be dangerous?
The research on combining CBD with alcohol.
The effects of alcohol during CBD supplementation were tested as early as 1979. A group of six men and four women consumed placebo (orange juice with sugar), CBD mixed in with the juice and alcohol, or alcohol alone. After that, the impact on participants’ motor skills and psychomotor skills was assessed based on the combinations given to them. The tests also involved measuring blood alcohol levels
The same impairment in all tests was noticed for the subjects who consumed alcohol and in those who received a mix of CBD and alcohol. In other words, both groups were intoxicated. Interestingly enough, however, it was shown that blood alcohol content was lower in participants who consumed CBD and alcohol, although motor and psychomotor impairment was at the same level in both groups.
Another interesting study is the one of which results appeared in 2013, in the journal Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior. The test subjects were rats who were given CBD (in the form of a gel or injection) just before administering alcohol to them. The results were surprising. Alcohol-induced neurodegeneration was reduced by more than 50 per cent, regardless of the form of CBD administration.
The effects of combining CBD and alcohol
It is difficult to know which of the effects of CBD and alcohol combination can occur for sure. That research semi-confirms that CBD mixed with alcohol could have a positive impact because it reduces blood alcohol levels and could hypothetically reduce neurodegeneration. On the other hand, CBD oil is just a supplement, so we can’t say with certainty that such action is the rule and also occurs when CBD is consumed with alcohol in a “non-laboratory” conditions. These are only speculations, and research on this topic is still ongoing. It’s certainly worth keeping in mind.
Are there any adverse effects of combining CBD with alcohol?
Some say that the combination of CBD and alcohol can be not only dangerous, but also simply unpleasant, because it can enhance the effects of both substances. However, this statement is far from the truth and probably results from a wrong understanding of CBD.
It is worth knowing that this combination of THC and alcohol can be dangerous for us, because it enhances the psychoactive effect of both substances. CBD, on the other hand, is not psychoactive. It is therefore not possible for it to increase intoxication related to alcohol consumption. This is also confirmed by the aforementioned studies from 1979.
Can I mix CBD and alcohol?
We do not recommend mixing CBD oil and other CBD-based products with alcohol or other psychoactive substances. CBD should be considered as a supplement that works most effectively when taken to improve the overall condition of the body. Alcohol impairs some of its functions, so taking CBD in some ways is pointless if you drink alcohol. Also, remember not to mix CBD and medications unless you consult your doctor.
The quality of the CBD oil matters
To get the most out of CBD oil, pay attention to which product you use. Poor quality CBD oil from an unknown source can potentially be more dangerous when mixed with alcohol. So we suggest that you only buy CBD products, including oils and hemp foods that have passed the appropriate tests. You will find them in our store.
