How does CBD work?
It’s no news to anyone that CBD oil is becoming more & more sought after due to public awareness around its many potential health benefits. CBD oil is an amazing natural product that works with the body to promote wellness and balance. But how does CBD work? Why is CBD oil such a powerful health supplement? If you would like to read more about CBD please read our article What is CBD? A beginners guide
The endocannabinoid system and homeostasis.
Due to the way CBD influences our endocannabinoid system (ECS) it has been receiving a lot of attention. But what is our ECS, how is it affected when we take CBD?
In each and everyone one of us exists a system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) The ECS performs a vital role in maintaining our health, yet it is rarely discussed. In fact this system is found in all mammals and it provides an essential function and helps our bodies reach homeostasis or balance.
The Endocannabinoid system (ECS) was discovered in the early 1990’s and has been described as ‘The supercomputer that regulates homeostasis in all mammals.’
The ECS is responsible for regulating an array of processes including; immune response, stress response, appetite, energy regulation, mood, and memory.
The endocannabinoid system supports homeostasis by utilising cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors found throughout the immune system and central and peripheral nervous systems.
When an imbalance is detected, the body naturally produces endocannabinoids to interact with the cannabinoid receptors, which in turn stimulate a chemical response that works to return the process that is out of balance back to homeostasis.
Unfortunately, numerous factors such as poor diet, pollution, lack of exercise and stress can lead to our bodies being unable to produce endocannabinoids and the ECS becomes deficient.
Clinical endocannabinoid deficiency.
The body naturally produces cannabinoids on demand, but scientists believe that in some cases not enough cannabinoids are created for the endocannabinoid system to work effectively. This condition, referred to as clinical endocannabinoid deficiency, has been linked to several health problems and diseases. In these cases, researchers have found evidence that supplementing with phytocannabinoids, such as CBD, could help the endocannabinoid system to function properly and lead to improved health.
How CBD oil interacts with the endocannabinoid system.
So, how does CBD work within the body? How does it positively interact with the endocannabinoid system?
From the moment we are born, we naturally produce compounds called endocannabinoids which are similar to CBD. Even Mothers milk has been found to contain cannabinoids which are thought to aid infants with their early development.
As we have discussed, it is possible to have an endocannabinoid deficiency, where your body is unable to produce enough of the natural cannabinoids to maintain homeostasis. This can lead to ill-health.
This is where CBD oil comes in. By taking CBD and other compounds found in cannabis we can boost the body’s own natural defenses and improve our health and wellbeing.
Once CBD oil is consumed it can begin to interact with the receptors within your endocannabinoid system. CBD oil can bolster your natural endocannabinoids and help maintain the balance you need. CBD helps enhance the beneficial role already played by our native ECS. This is why taking CBD is so important in supporting our health and wellness.
Is it time you started taking CBD oil?
There are thousands of studies available out there which highlight how great CBD is in supporting and maintaining health. Research surrounding the cannabis plant is literally exploding, and from this we are starting to be able to put together a picture of what happens to CBD once digested in the body.
We are the first generation of Humans to know about the ECS and as research escalates, knowledge around how the ECS functions, promises to revolutionise the food and health industry. It is most likely, the most important field of biology ever discovered.
We have discussed how CBD works within the body – it helps our bodies reach optimal health by encouraging balance or homeostasis. CBD oil also offers many benefits without the nasty side effects often associated with alternative treatment options. CBD is truly one of the most remarkable compounds in the natural world.
With all these benefits it’s no wonder more and more people are turning to CBD for a multitude of reasons.
