CBD in Parkinson’s treatment – facts and myths

Parkinson’s disease is a common and, unfortunately, quite an unpleasant disease. For this reason, people are looking for alternative ways for a slightly lighter course of this disorder. Read on and find out if CBD can support Parkinson’s treatment.

What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a long-lasting disorder of the central nervous system. The following symptoms occur after each other and gradually begin to affect the patient’s everyday life. First, there is stiffness and trembling of the extremities and balance problems. Characteristic to later stages is partial aphasia (inability to speak, sometimes combined with an inability to comprehend speech) and loss of walking ability. It is an incurable disease, but some of its symptoms can be alleviated by performing surgical procedures.

There is still little to nothing known about Parkinson’s treatment. For some time now, however, CBD oil is speculated to mitigate the course of the disease. Are those speculations true?

CBD is not a drug

CBD-based products, including those sold by us *, are not drugs. They do not have the medicinal properties that would allow CBD to be a cure. It is worth explaining because many manufacturers falsely claim that CBD is a way to treat all ailments. The only thing we can say with certainty is that cannabidiol has some non-medical properties that can facilitate the everyday life of some patients. What does it look like in the case of Parkinson’s disease?

CBD in Parkinson’s treatment

Obtaining CBD from hemp plants is possible due to the proper process of extraction. The result is CBD hemp oil with a close to none amount of THC content – it doesn’t cause intoxication but has a high concentration of cannabidiol, a substance with properties that are worth noting.

The Endocannabinoid system is naturally found in our bodies and maintains its internal balance. The receptors CB1 and CB2 are located throughout the whole body and are the most important. CBD stimulates those receptors, prompting the brain to produce dopamine. Dopamine, in turn, halts the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, which has been confirmed by research. However, care should be taken because the statement that CBD suppresses Parkinson’s symptoms is far from the truth. Dopamine is responsible for that condition.

Furthermore, in 2017, it was proven (as you can read here), that CBD blocks the receptor called GPR6, which, according to research, is responsible for the impairment of the movement of Parkinson’s patients.

It is also worth adding that CBD oil has a good effect on our well-being; it can help relax, translating directly into a better quality of life for the patient.
