5 Potential side effects of using CBD oil

With the growing popularity of CBD oils, numerous myths have been created around them, which are willingly reproduced by the media. It certainly can be said that CBD maintains wellbeing and supports overall good health, however – as in case of any other dietary supplement, – it may also cause side effects. How often do they occur? Are they troublesome?

CBD is one of the safest cannabinoids and has a number of properties that help to keep overall health balance. It does not cause a psychoactive effect and, at the same time, interacts with our body’s native endocannabinoid system (ECS) to promote homeostasis and optimal health. People taking CBD oils occasionally complain about:

  •         dry mouth,
  •         dizziness,
  •         drowsiness,
  •         reduced blood pressure,
  •         delay, occasionally even inhibition of certain medicines’ effects.

What potential side effects cause CBD oil?

1. Dry mouth

One of the potential side effects of using CBD oil is the unpleasant feeling of dry mouth. This may occur while using CBD oil as the endocannabinoid system stops to produce regular amounts of saliva, which may result from CBD involvement in the processes of the given system. A study published by Argentinian researchers in 2006 shows that cannabinoid receptors are found in submandibular glands responsible for the production of saliva. Their activation changes not only the amount of saliva, but also its consistency.

This side effect is experienced by quite a few people who use CBD oils. However, it is very easy to overcome by maintaining an adequate level of hydration, so that the dry mouth does not occur at all or becomes very limited.

2. Dizziness

Another potential side effect of using CBD oil is dizziness, although this tends to occur with higher doses of CBD. Dizziness, similarly to dry mouth, may appear immediately after taking CBD oil. It may be accompanied by small headaches, blurred or vague vision and problems with maintaining balance. Temporary drop in blood pressure is to blame for such a state of things. Drinking a cup of coffee, tea or any other caffeine-based drink is more than enough to ease this uncomfortable feeling.

This effect is hence short-lived and easy to overcome. This potential side effect usually passes after a maximum of 10 minutes. A person taking CBD should keep this in mind because it is worth arranging a schedule for CBD supplements intake, so that you can have a break, rest and restore the regular blood pressure.

3. Drowsiness

Drowsiness is another potential side effect of using CBD oil. After a high dose of CBD oil, some users may experience drowsiness. It occurs more often in people who do not rest well, as CBD may stress tiredness or weariness. This effect however cannot be perceived as regular, because in other patients a completely opposite reaction have been observed – they normally feel stimulated, motivated and willing to act.

While using CBD oils, it is worth taking care of proper sleep hygiene. Immediately after taking the supplement, it is disadvised to drive a car or other machines that require 100% concentration.

4. Reduced blood pressure

This is in fact the most important potential side effect of using CBD oil, as it affects all other issues. The endocannabinoid system, in reaction to an additional dose of CBD, relaxes the organs, including blood vessels, so that the blood may flow more slowly, which consequently reduces its pressure. This state of affairs slows the supply of nutrients to important organs, and – although it is not dangerous in any way, – it may be disruptive to some patients. Particular attention should be paid by those, who take medicines to lower their blood pressure.

5. Delay, occasionally even inhibition of certain medicines’ effects

CBD may interact with some drugs because it inhibits the activity of specific liver enzymes, in particular cytochrome P450, which is responsible for metabolization of nutrients, so a person who takes a lot of medicine and decides to support their therapy with CBD oil for better wellbeing, should consult a doctor.

CBD side effects? don’t worry

Although there are a few potential side effects of using CBD, they are minor and often short-lived. Not everyone will experience them and the potential therapeutic benefits often out way these minor irritations. But please be aware of these potential side effects when you choose to start your CBD journey.
