Beginner’s guide to CBD and cannabidiol
There has been a lot of talk in the mainstream media recently about CBD, a cryptically called, hemp-derived substance, but what exactly is it and what does it do?
- CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of the many cannabinoids, or chemical compounds found in cannabis and hemp. It has a plethora of health benefits and is believed to support your well-being on a daily basis. It also provides a source of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, healthy fatty acids like omega-3, protein.
- Although it’s extracted from cannabis plants, it’s part of the medical marijuana family, and doesn’t contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid found in hemp plants that people use to get high. CBD is non-intoxicating and should not be confused for cannabis containing THC.
- Due to the positive outcome of many studies CBD is transforming into a potential breakthrough nutritional component and wellness supplement that could change the game completely. The CBD fan base is growing as more and more people take advantage of its effects.

How does CBD work in the body?
When cannabidiol enters the bloodstream it interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. The ECS is a regulatory system made up of endocannabinoids and the receptors that they are attached to. Almost every cell in our body has these receptors, but they are mostly found in the brain and in the central nervous system.
The ECS, when boosted by cannabinoids, balances its functions to maintain homeostasis within the body. It’s found in all mammals and is responsible for regulating a wide variety of bodily functions – such as mood, appetite, sleep, hormone production, and even nervous and immune system responses.
The body does create its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids, to help support our regulatory system. Similar to how we use vitamin C to kick start our immune system, CBD acts as a kick starter for these cannabinoids to keep the receptors working at optimal capacity and to help the functions of the body’s central regulatory system.
